03 Mar Why I Give: Debbie Emmons
We sat down with Debbie Emmons of Muncie to learn about why she gives to the Youth Opportunity Center. She is married to Mike and they have two kids, Courtney and Cameron. Debbie and her family contribute in multiple ways, including volunteering, playing in the golf outing, contributing financially, and donating items like candy and stuffed animals. There are a variety of ways to give back to the kids here—and all are equally important and impactful!
HOW DID YOU FIRST GET INVOLVED WITH THE YOC?
I was familiar with the YOC for a while, but became more connected in 2013 through my daughter, Courtney, who is an employee here. I began by helping shop for Christmas presents for the kids. Over time, I have become more involved as I learn more about the kids here and what they have been through. Through Courtney, I have gotten to know quite a few staff members and they all have such a heart for kids, which is really inspiring.
WHAT IMPACT DO YOU FEEL YOU ARE MAKING BY GIVING TO THE YOC?
I want to do what I can to help these kids. Safe people make all the difference in the lives of kids and that is what the YOC provides. I know that every little bit makes a difference.
WHAT DO YOU WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT THE YOC?
The kids at the YOC are not bad kids. They have been given a bad handout and are there because of what people have caused for them. The staff are amazing and put their hearts into what they are doing for the kids.
